Giamatti is just pure genius, one of the best actors currently working and he is so watchable that it is difficult to do him full credit. Hoffman compliments him greatly here and the support from Minnie Driver and Rosamund Pike is also strong.
It's funny at times but ultimately desperately sad. It mixes comedy, tradgedy, romance, and murder mystery very nicely in a film that maybe lacked the necessary feature feel that would have served it better from a popularity point of view.
You can ask yourself a million times why all these beautiful women would fall for such a complete schlub but you will be well aware all the while that it happens all the time in real life!. Giamatti's film.
