Review of Barney's Version (2010) by Bart G — 14 Jul 2011
A long, sprawling film about one man's life (his three marriages, his murder investigation, and his Alzheimer's) is carried by a masterful performance by Paul Giamatti. He makes you root for what should be a wholly unlikeable character in Barney.
The character, and the film itself, is equal parts charming and funny, and heartbreaking and depressing. Dustin Hoffman and Rosamund Pike put in great performances as well, and being a Canadian Jew myself, I appreciated the many references to Barney being both Canadian and Jewish.
