Giamatti does "unlikeable" in this meant-to-be-picaresque-but-actually-embarrassingly-offkey saga (clearly abridged from a longer novel). It is hard to feel the sympathy for Barney that the script wishes to foist upon the viewer at the end after all of his inconsiderate unfeeling behavior.
Paul G gives a one-note performance to boot. Occasionally things coalesced into a scene with some zest but this doesn't lead me to recommend this film.
