Review of Barbara (2012) by Ola S — 14 Sep 2012
This film got the Silver bear in the Berlin festival. It's East Germany in 1980. A female doctor is deported to a provincial hospital because of her subversive contacts. We don't know exactly which, but Stasi enters her apartment any time to examine both her home and her body.
No drama about that. It's shown here like it was an everyday thing. It doesn't take the story further, it's only part of the background. Barbara, the doctor, however has advanced plans of going to the West, when something happens which makes her make another choice.
The moral here is about what's important. Our own freedom or the sacrifice for others? No, it's not about a sacrifice for dictatorship, it's about other people being more important than yourself.
