Review of Bamboozled (2000) by Mike P — 10 Mar 2010
A strong satirical premise is primarily undone by a terrible lead performance by Damon Wayans and the film's insistence to repeatedly tell me (in no uncertain terms) What This Movie Is About. Even the use of Lee's signature call to "Wake up!" starts to ring hollow after the fifth time it is used.
Still, I generally liked it and appreciated what Lee was doing here. There's no doubt that he speaks with a clear and strong voice. Perhaps if he hid what he was satirizing a little more, I might have less of a headache from all the times I was hit over the head with The Point. Though, there is the risk that of people not getting the point and making the movie exactly like it's plot.
It is infuriating for content, tonal shifts, and heavy handed storytelling (and did I mention that lead performance), but the central theme is not one to be ignored.
