Review of Ballad of a Soldier (1959) by Philip E — 19 Jan 2010
As a reward for destroying two Nazi tanks in battle, a young Russian private is granted six-days leave to visit his mother. The goodness of his character endangers his ultimate goal, for along the way he chooses to help a number of his fellow countrymen.
Elegiac in tone, elegant in presentation, poetic with its message, "Ballad of a Soldier" is sure to remain relevant to future generations due to its humanist core.
