Review of Ballad of a Soldier (1959) by Jake W — 17 Nov 2007
Rises above what could have been sentimental propaganda for the Soviet wartime state, by dint of its poetic imagery and film-making skill, as well as the fact it always puts simple human emotion at the forefront.
The story is beautifuly simple - a young soldier's odyssey home to his village - and the central love story is extremely well-observed and poignant. A sweet little gem.
