Review of Ball of Fire (1941) by Stephen M — 16 Mar 2008
I am amazed by the number of people I have met who don't know this film. I guess it has sort of fallen behind in the public eye, overshadowed by other movies of this era like Meet John Doe, Citizen Kane, All About Eve and so many others with stars and directors of similar stature. Nevertheless, Ball of Fire proves to be a timeless comedy utilizing the overwhelming comic genius of Miss Stanwyck and Mr Cooper. The storyline is clever, the characters charming, the dialogue is the stuff that we all WISH we could say but that would just sound out of place in today's society. It is a true gem of the silver screen era, if for no other reason than the entire Drumboogie sequence, featuring the greatest drummer of all time, Gene Krupa.
This film symbolizes everything that was great about this era of film making.
