Review of Baise-moi (2000) by Chris S — 11 Aug 2008
So, I hear about this controversial French feminist film about two women who go on a crime spree. I hear it was banned in a number of countries because of the graphic depictions of sex and violence. Sex and violence are catnip to me, so I rent it.
This movie was nothing but a porno with too much plot. In fact, the two lead actresses were porn stars (Anderson quit the business soon after this movie came out, Lancaume [an extraordinarily attractive woman] unfortunately committed suicide in 2005). Given the graphic, hardcore sex, I suppose you only could cast porn actresses to do this movie (no offense, Chole Sevigny).
Baise Moi is a poor knock-off of Natural Born Killers, done with what would appear to be a budget of $35. Obviously, the hardcore sex was thrown in to get the movie some buzz, which it did overseas but its brief run in the US went virtually unnoticed. Sex removed, there's nothing memorable, except perhaps the insane dialogue (which, in fairness, could be the result of poor translation in the subtitles). The special effects for the violence can best be described as "ketchup packet and whipper-snappers". Save the time and rent one of Lancaume's porno flicks - get the penetration without the "arty" pretext.
