Review of Baise-moi (2000) by Ben P — 01 Mar 2010
Like its protagonists, and its title, Baise-Moi is exhibitionist, scandalous, audacious and totally fucking debauched! As a narrative movie it's total dogshit: peeps have tried to tag this as a feminist statement and a rape 'n' revenge flick, but seeing as the girls are kinda arbitrary in their choice of victim (and never go after Manu's rapists), neither rationalization impresses me. Nevertheless, the unbridled carnal energy of the two leads gives this pointless, kill-crazy exploitation flick a certain something-something which reduces its gross narrative failings to an unfortunate footnote.
In short, watch the film, enjoy the luscious leads in their sexually-ravenous, unsimulated glory, but don't expect it all to make much in the way of sense. This is an X-rated Thelma & Louise sans thematic value -- d'accord?
