Review of Bad Times at the El Royale (2018) by Anthony N — 21 Oct 2018
Loved this movie. Acting is solid. Characters are fun and well developed. The soundtrack is snappy and each song provides the mood for the scene in which it plays. While th film will drag to a slow down at times, those slow downs do create enough tension to keep the viewer in the movie. The twists are fast and furious once the movie starts to roll. A few of them are a bit predictable, though. Overall 4-5 stars due mainly to the talented cast carrying this character study. Hamm. early on is the comic relief. Cynthis Erivo as the long past her prime aspiring singer is magnetic. And Dakota Johnson shows depth and grit in her role. Bridges does what he always does; he's always spot on. Hemsworth is fun in a role Marvel fans will find uncomfortable nails his part.
The El Royale itself plays its own role. Feeling trapped with the cast. the motel really is its own charismatic character.
It plays a little long at just at two and a half hours but with excellent tension and the aforementioned character development, two and a half hours seems necessary. It was money well spent on a nice fall Saturday afternoon.
