Brilliant modern-day western, with Spencer Tracy as a one-armed war veteran arriving in a remote desert town and uncovering a terrible crime. A fine performance from Tracy, and director John Sturges effectively racks up the tension as the secretive townsfolk (led by tyrannical redneck Robert Ryan) resort to ever more desperate measures to bury the truth.
