Review of Bad Day at Black Rock (1955) by Grayson D — 22 Feb 2011
Even after multiple viewings, I can't quite jump on board in calling this film a masterpiece, as many have. It's a good film, with some great visuals, a strong atmosphere of tension, and solid performances from its supporting cast (though I still don't quite understand why Spencer Tracy's performance in this film is so renowned, it didn't do much for me).
But it's also heavy-handed with its messages, built around a predictable central mystery, and looses steam well before the end, despite its short running time. Maybe it had more of an impact in its day, but I personally don't think it holds up very well.
