Review of Baby Face (1933) by Brian K — 13 Sep 2008
Just before Hollywood began censoring itself with the Hayes Code, BABY FACE was released. Barbara Stanwyck plays, well, a power-mongering slut who sleeps her way to the top of an international bank company.
And you sympathize with her character despite her objectives. The movie is pretty tame by today's standards: all the sex is still off-screen, but the mere implication that she was "improper" was cause for public outcry back in 1933.
Even without the sensationalism, the movie is okay for today's audiences. I would hold it in slightly higher regard if it weren't for the happy ending. (Why do sluts always have to settle down? Why can't sluts just be sluts?) Watch for a cameo by John Wayne.
