Review of Babe: Pig in the City (1998) by Christopher S — 21 Nov 2008
Bizarre and surprising fable from director George Miller can probably be appreciated better by adults than by children. Dynamic fantasy visuals and colorfully grotesque characters - both animal and human - are brought to life with excellent production design and special effects; there is definitely a touch of Jean-Pierre Jeunet and even Fellini to the offbeat cinematic style.
Unfortunately, the underwhelming second half degenerates into a more conventional family film, failing to live up to the weirdness potential of the first half. Nigel Westlake's subtle score was a bit of a letdown, the film could have benefited from a livelier score.
