Review of Babe: Pig in the City (1998) by Jason A — 03 May 2011
Almost perfect. Dark and beautiful, the film has balls of steel as it veers into horrifying territory for the first hour and fifteen minutes. And just when I thought I'd seen something heartbreaking and brilliant - something that had never been done in a children's movie before (taking the nightmare fantasy sensibilities of early Gilliam and Jeunet) - it gets too wacky and comedic at the end. It's still lovely, and I completely understand why - you simply cannot have a children's film be this horrifying.
But a part of me still thinks, what a shame...
