Review of Away from Her (2007) by Daniel A — 02 Jan 2012
An emotional and gently heartbreaking drama about the onset of Alzheimer's for an elderly married couple.
Away From Her has a lot to say, speaking on the effects of aging, the significance of marriage, and the advancement of one of the most emotionally ripe diseases out there, it handles its mature subject matter with dignity and great sensitivity.
Sarah Polley's screenplay twinkles as brightly as the glint that can still be found in Julie Christie's eyes, her performance is as stunning she ever was, and frankly, still is. She creates in her character a great dignity, no matter how badly the disease may be affecting her, preventing the film from falling into overly sentimental territories but steering it into a deeply touching place. The restraint she shows is refreshing, while her personal struggles are incredibly open and authentic. Equally Gordon Pinsent playing her loving husband should not be overlooked, as he too exhibits many of these qualities, providing a rich and tender performance.
This is truly a thoughtful and lovingly crafted movie.
