Review of Awakenings (1990) by Nick H — 04 Mar 2010
A very dramatic and inspiring movie, Awakenings features two of the greatest actors of our generation in Robin Williams and Robert DeNiro as they put on an amazing performance.
The story follows Dr. Malcolm Sayer who starts work at a local hospital in the Bronx and is trying to get through to his patients but to no prevail. Then he meets Leonard Lowe who is a catatonic patient. He works with many of them and finds out that certain things will trigger their reflexes. He then finds a cure that somehow awakens them out of their state of mind and they can once again move and communicate like normal. Leonard explores the world he has missed for so long and teaches Malcolm to communicate with people better. But as the cure starts to wear off, the patients go back to their motionless state and Malcolm tries to find a way to save them.
This is an exceptionally great movie. One of my favorites and a movie that really brings out your emotions and shows you not to take life for granted.
