Review of Awakenings (1990) by Darryl K — 22 Mar 2011
A tear-jerking true(ish) tale of a doctor bringing his patients out a comatose state might not sound like a film you would want to watch, but you should. While made during the era of Hollywood feel-goodness, this is still a poignant story of sorrow and hope.
With a great performance by De Niro, I personally think Williams performance stands out here (showing why he went on to do more similar dramatic roles later). While it tries a little too hard at times to pull on the heart strings, there are many genuine moments of insight bringing the viewers into an awakening of their own.
