Review of Awakenings (1990) by Janson S — 31 Jan 2012
Penny Marshall's "Awakenings" is a brilliant film with strong performances and a great message. Robin Williams gives a great performance as a neurologist that is ousted because of his shyness with people.
Williams plays Dr. Malcolm Sayer perfectly, proving that he can handle much more than just comedic roles. Robert De Niro is amazing as a patient struggling with illness. De Niro never goes over the top with his performance and certainly deserved the Academy Award nomination he got.
The rest of the cast including Julie Kavner, John Heard, and Penelope Ann Miller are all charming in their roles. The soundtrack and script for this film are delightful. This is a deeply moving and jubilantly satisfying film.
One of the greatest ever to come out in the 90's.
