Review of Autumn Sonata (1978) by Polina I — 15 Nov 2007
I came into this film loving both Ingrid Bergman, as well as Ingmar Bergman. I was certain it was to be great, I was surprised however. It's not that I was disappointed, for it was the quite the opposite.
But the style was what surprised me. Coming into only having seen The Seventh Seal, I'm sure someone can understand why. It still however had great writing, and acting for that matter. The mother/daughter relationship of Liv Ullmann and Ingrid Bergman was intensely emotional and grasped your attention whenever they came on the screen together.
However, I don't think this film is for everyone. Not just anyone can stomach such dysfunctional families such as this one. It still however comes highly recommended.
