Review of Australia (1989) by Gabriel K — 22 Jun 2010
Luhrmann's "Australia" definitely seems an genuine Australian film made by Australians with lots of Australians in it, although with substantial Hollywood cash. I guess there was high anticipation before its release.
Unfortunately, the story, overall acting and idea for the film fall short. At first, the film feels like a computerized American western of sorts, to end up being a war-genre epic. Nicole Kidman shines in this one, and to be honest it was the only reason I ended up watching it till the very end.
