OK, I love, love, LOVE Rosalind Russell. She was fantastic. I don't go old school too often but this movie is one of my favorites. It's sweet and witty and she is just hysterical. Definitely her performances in the 30s 40s and 50s were what Lucille Ball based her act on. She's fast-talking, funny and so appealing.

Now this role in particular is known to be the role she's most remembered for. Despite a great list of starring roles and stellar performances (His Gal Friday - another favorite of mine of course), I'm sure she didn't mind it being Auntie Mame at the top for most people.

Set in NYC just around the stockmarket crash of '29 the story is about a completely over the top flamboyant woman (Mame Dennis) and her life after she is decreed to be the guardian of her only living relative, her nephew Patrick. The film follows them at intervals over a 20 year period or so.

Clearly a Broadway show brought to the silver screen, right down to the scene ending fade outs, and cue the music... Lots of funny side characters and funny lines.

"The neighborhood is restricted. I mean VERRRRRYYYY RESTRICTED...".

"I'll get a bloodtest.".

It is straight out of the 50s (not that I was alive then or would even have wanted to be, no offense. :) ) but all the costumes and hairdos and social commentary is pretty funny to see.

Without a doubt, the movie's success is owed entirely to Rosalind Russell. Without her warmth or appeal, this character would have seemed too boisterous, bordering on obnoxious. Instead you can't help but love her and her big heart.
