Review of Audition (2000) by Nelson P — 27 May 2011
I don't know what it is about the quality of a Japanese film being made in the 90's and looking as if it were made in the 80's, but this film makes it work to its advantage. While most people tend to complain about a slow pace in any film, I love how this seems so realistic as to how it goes from sweet and lovely to harsh and oh-so freaky. The third act of the film, which is where the true horror of the film starts, just seemed to throw every bit horror movie cliches at you, ranging from physically painful to mentally disturbing. I did feel a bit disappointed that it didn't take the advantage to make the torture scene all graphic, so that's why I took down a star, but everything else worked out pretty well. I especially love how the movie did its psychological moments so vividly, making me question whether if they were real or not.
My final verdict: A great film to watch at any time. It might not scare some, and it might not be heartwarming (as much as this movie can throw at you) to others, but there's a little something for some movie fan. Check it out for yourself and see what's the buzz all about.
