Review of Audition (2000) by Dorianator F — 20 Sep 2015
I've been wanting to see this movie for a very long time, especially after seeing it being featured on many "The Most Disturbing Movies" lists on YouTube. And since I love disturbing movies, I had to see it.
I was not dissapointed. The movie's story is about Aoyama, a widowed TV producer, who decides to create an audition so it's easier for him to select his next wife. Yeah, that's quite creepy, actually.
Nevertheless, he starts to fall in love with this one particular young woman who noone really knows, nor does she have any family that can be contacted. Soon, they start dating and all of a sudden Aoyama is in very deep sh**! Probably everyone already knows the twist of this movie, but I'll still not spoil it, just in case there's someone who hasn't heard of this movie.
The movie's last 30-40 minutes is the only part when the movie is actually disturbing. Which I thought was a bit dissapointing. Until about 1 hour mark, it feels like a romantic drama, but then everything goes south.
While I love movies that have a tone shift, I don't like when it takes longer than it needs to. The acting is great and the characters, especially the woman, are very intriguing. The movie looks great and the atmosphere is very dark and unsettling.
The ending confused me, though. Just when I thought I understood it, something happened and I was left again confused. All in all, a very disturbing movie, except when it isn't, with great characters, intriguing story and a very unsettling atmosphere.
I would recommend checking this movie out.
