Review of Au Hasard Balthazar (1966) by Adrian B — 19 Apr 2011
A very sad narrative on the life and death of a donkey, brought to the world during the French New Wave. The donkey, by the name of Balthazar, is born into a family surrounded by children, so he starts out with a happy life.
Unfortunately, the family is forced to give up the donkey and he is transferred from one owner to the next. Some, notably the circus act, are none to kind. In addition, a girl who is fond of the donkey, faces disgrace from her family.
It is quite a sad story and but also effective. It is photographed very well, but for me, it is a little uninvolving. A nice, pleasent French film.
