Bresson's most well known film is one of the truly essential films in the history of cinema because it stripes down all cliches, typicality and formula of film and allows itself to be a film. Margeurite Duras said it perfectly that every film before Bresson was like a parasite feeding off of other art forms.

Bresson makes pure cinema. This film is also one of the most beautiful ever made not only because of its quiet minimalism or it's powerful shots (such as the hands laying prostrate on a bench in wait for a tender touch) but also because, as Godard said, it is a film that shows the world in an hour and 30 minutes.

We see just how incredible the magnitude of humanity's ignorance really is when compared with a docile, loyal, and completely humble donkey. It's so powerful and even today it feels new.
