Review of Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) by Jack C — 20 Sep 2008

This is a peculiar film. For Disney, it's very peculiar. It starts great, with an awesome opening sequence full of action and brilliant visuals. From there though, it slides down a slippery slope towards average land.

The story (of a young explorer searching for Atlantis) gets going way too quickly. We only just meet our main character and then suddenly we're 20,000 leagues under the sea. Clearly the directors were keen to get the story going but a little bit more characterization would have been nice.

Instead Disney choose to just chuck in a few stereotypical 'adventure crew' characters like the female engine expert and the big black fast talking doctor. To be fair these guys provided a lot of the laughs so I can't complain.

To be honest writing this review is a bit like watching the film. It could be great but I'm a bit tired and I don't want to use complicated metaphors to explain the meaning behind everything. I just want to say it was alright.

Some of it was funny, other bits were forgettable. Michael J. Fox's voice is always a pleasure to hear though.
