Review of Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) by Matthew F. J — 27 Jan 2015
Although quite epic in it's scope, the film is limited by contrived storyline, one dimension characters that turns quickly into annoying caricatures and an animation style well under the level of quality Disney has displayed in the past.
Some scenes are beautiful and filled with lyricism but overall the film turns out to be no better or worse than most Disney films from the last twenty years. In the hands of more creative and imaginative people Atlantis would have been something absolutely epic, grandiose and a fertile ground for imagination, exploration and dream.
Here we are left with a very formulaic film, that proves the ropes and tricks used by Disney, are clearly reaching their limits and show signs of strong repetition. We are unfortunately left with a film that had huge potential but turns out to be between good and bad.
I usually call that disappointing.
