Review of Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) by Jason E — 06 Feb 2015
I've seen worse. Of course, I've also seen better. The point is, I don't think it's as bad as the general consensus seems to imply. Is the beginning rushed beyond all belief? Yes. Are there a lot of points that don't make sense? Yes.
Is the villain kind of unoriginal? Yes. But, when that model fleet pops up, something happens. The design is creative, the visuals are breathtaking, the mythology is interesting, there is a lot to like here.
The side characters, while underdeveloped, are still entertaining. The demolition guy, Vinny, there's a reason he's popular among this movie's fans. Lyle Rourke may have weak motivations, but so do plenty of other Disney villains.
The leviathan is awesome. And while quite a few red shirts die because of said ancient sea beast, this isn't the first time mass death has been depicted in a Disney movie. It may not be the best, but it was definitely a solid entry in the Disney canon.
