Review of Atlantic City (1944) by Steve K — 26 Nov 2009
I did not realize until after I was done watching "Lacombe Lucien" that I'd rented two Louis Malle films in the same batch. This is not quite as epic, but it's an excellent story told against a fascinating backdrop: the transformation of Atlantic City following the legalization of gambling. Amidst wrecking balls and demolition charges, Lancaster is a small-time numbers runner who never made his mark and is visibly disappearing with the old city. With Susan Sarandon, he has a chance to live his dream, if only for a moment. Amazing performances all around; hard to believe this film doesn't stand out more prominently.
And, for Will Ferrell fans: the appearance by Robert Goulet is silly, but golden.
