Review of At the Circus (1939) by Bobby D — 21 Jul 2010
I hadn't watched a Marx ( no the other guys) movie in a long time. The kids luved Chaplin's Circus and of course Bugs Bunny aka Groucho should be a winner. The film is uneven and seems like they knocked it out over a weekend.
The music is uninspired but the comedy is funny. Some really great physical gags like a real live action Loony Tunes. The verbal comedy is a bit dated (some of the references no one today will get) and rather burlesque.
I wonder if the Marx Bros got thier start at more seedy end of Vaudeville? Star Wars fan rivia: a very young Kenny Baker is in this movie.
