Review of At the Circus (1939) by David F — 25 Mar 2010
Doesn't have the sustained hilarity of the earlier films, but this solid Marx Brothers romp still beats the tar out of most of today's comedies. Highlights include Groucho's rendition of 'Lydia The Tattooed Lady', his suspension in mid-air with the icy femme fatale Eve Arden, and a symphonic climax with the inimitable Margaret Dumont.
As always, the viewer is forced to suffer through the usual cheesy romantic subplot and the ensuing and requisite sappy love ballads.
