Review of Assault on a Queen (1966) by Allan C — 02 Nov 2013
Oddball Frank Sinatra vehicle, where the chairman of the board plays an undersea treasure hunter turned modern day pirate. Frank discovers a sunken submarine and he crew wants to cash in on their find by robbing a cruise liner.
There's an out of place jazzy score, a odd Ocean's 11-like crew (including the gorgeous Virna Lisi) and one of the strangest heist getaway chase you'll ever see. A seagoing heist film involving a submarine is pretty original, but the characters and plot points are all pretty by the numbers, which is surprising considering that Rod Serling wrote the screenplay, who is normally very reliable for turing out smart, original scripts.
Not a bad film, but certainly not one of Frank or Serling's best.
