Review of Ashes and Diamonds (1958) by Private U — 06 Aug 2008
I'm not sure which I liked more - this or Kanal. Kanal was much more brutal in terms of both cinematography and atmosphere, but Ashes and Diamonds has a lot going for it too. Wajda said that he felt this was when he matured as a director, not directing when things didn't need to be directed. I have to agree, the film flows along much smoother and the atmosphere much more ambivalent than Kanal.
Cybulski was also excellent at creating a Polish James Dean for the part of Maciek. The ending shot is pretty unforgettable.
