Arrival was an incredibly unique science fiction by approaching an alien invasion film without all the bloodshed. The film almost seems like a textbook on how first contact would be approached in the political of today's world.

While the story seems like something new and fresh, the fact remains that it's far from it. The plot of the film is basically a rip-off of Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind with storytelling elements used by Hitchcock in his prime.

Just because the film pays homage to classic films doesn't mean that the film is stale in any way. These factors combined are what make Arrival the best film of 2016.
