Review of Armadillo (2010) by Aidan H — 09 Feb 2011
While Armadillo treads almost the same ground as Restrepo, it beats the latter hands-down for its honest depiction of life on the front line in Afghanistan. Following the exploits of a bunch of new recruits from the Danish army, Pederson's documentary counters the day-to-day patrols (boring) with intense battle sequences (exciting and scary) and scatters poignant interviews with the young warriors along the way.
It's a beautifully-shot film too as we follow the men across open ground where the Taliban spray them with deadly gunfire. Although it doesn't baulk from showing the impact of the war on ordinary Afghanis, it steers away from making moralistic assumptions and concentrates instead on the army life and its highs and lows.
As war documentaries go, Armadillo takes no prisoners. Watch it.
