Review of Appaloosa (2008) by Dean R — 27 Dec 2009
This was the best western I've seen in a very long time. It was better than the criminally underated "Open Range". Ed Harris shines as Marshal Virgil Cole and Viggo Mortensen channels Doc Holliday as Deputy Everett Hitch.
What I love about this film is how unconventional it is. It has gunfights, sure, but the gunfights don't go on for minutes.......they last only seconds. In fact, one of the funniest moments in the film gave a nod to that fact in hilarious yet morbid fashion. This movie is a movie about friendship.........in fact, extraordinary friendship that never faulters in the face of many challenges.
*Spoiler Alert* The bad guy dies in the end, but he does not die the way you would expect. His death ultimately points to the friendship that the two heroes share. You have to watch this film.
