Review of Appaloosa (2008) by Derek P — 07 Jun 2010
Right off the bat, I'm not a huge fan at all of the Western genre. Really the only movie of that genre I can say I actually enjoy is 3:10 to Yuma, both the original and remake. Being a huge Cronenberg fan, I was stunned by Harris and Mortensen in A History of Violence, I knew I needed to see this when it came out.
Skip ahead to June 2010. Still needing to see it, I happened to turn on HBO to see it JUST starting. I was in and ready to watch. Right off the bat I have to say this movie had a There Will Be Blood feel to me (my all time favorite movie), which kept me hooked.
To make it simple, the movie isn't action packed, it doesn't need to be. The acting, the story, all of it just keeps you glued. Not to mention seeing a badass Lance Henriksen playing a villain swooning on Harris's woman (she's a total whore).
Long story short, I put this movie way ahead of 3:10 to Yuma, it just has a presence and a feel to it that makes me want to revisit it all over again, and not years later. Overall, Henriksen, Mortensen and Harris were top notch here and when there was action, it was nail biting good stuff.
To top it off, I thought Harris was amazing, but when the credits rolled, I saw he was the director, more points on his part.
