Review of Appaloosa (2008) by Hunter D — 17 Nov 2010
Westerns are something modern audiences get once in a blue moon, fortunately Ed Harris really delivers with APPALOOSA, a film that explores complex male themes in a decidedly un-P.C. way in a genre that is filled with testosterone.
Harris accomplishes this with fantastic performances from the entire cast, which includes Viggo Mortensen, Renee Zellweger, Jeremy Irons, and Lance Henriksen. This film is proof that the western genre, the first genre to put itself to film, isn't dead, and has further ground to be explored.
This is an exciting prospect, given that the Western is the oldest genre filmmakers know, and yet it has yet to be tapped out. Filmmakers interested in other genres should take note: there is more oil under the ground explored by your genre heroes, you just have to look for it.
