Review of Apollo 13 (1995) by Andrew M — 27 May 2016
The story of the Apollo 13 mission is a fascinating one, and Ron Howard's take on it definitely does it justice. It's less about the mission itself, and more about the people involved in the mission and the teamwork that allowed for the crew to return home safely.
That's not limited to just the actual astronauts: the NASA crew on Earth, as well as the families of the astronauts, all have a good amount of screentime, and all three of these points-of-view are well developed for the most part.
The astronaut crew is obviously the most developed, and the family is probably the least developed, but the focus on the characters is admirable to say the least. Tom Hanks is as great as ever, and Bill Paxton, Kevin Bacon, and Ed Harris all do well alongside him.
It's not just a character-driven movie though: seeing as the film deals with space travel, it comes with visual spectacle that is absolutely stunning. The 140 minute runtime can drag at times, but overall, Apollo 13 is a truly inspiring film, and a worthwhile watch.
