Review of Apocalypto (2006) by Damjan R — 21 Jul 2012
Visually interesting, but indulgent and overly long without specific reason, Apocalypto seeks to shock and impress, but only manages the former. It's plot is not about anything really because motifs and theme get touched on but are then abandoned for more gratuitous violence.
The action is better than average, but the bad guys are your average meatheads who rarely think before acting and almost always get themselves killed for it (a little caution perhaps, I mean where is the hurry really? It's not like they are going anywhere.
..). The main character gets bailed out so many times it's really unnerving to watch, all in a nick of time mind you. It's not all bad, the acting is pretty good, and the general feel of the movie has a kind of quality, but Gibson seems intent on showing only savagery without any hint of humanity underneath.
