Review of Apocalypto (2006) by Dennis D — 30 May 2018
NO ONE should think that this movie is accurate.
Directed by a bigoted sexist racist, the movie is full of blatant inaccuracies, which are more akin to what would be expected from a half-assed history report by a grade school child who failed to pay attention during history class.
Claiming to be about the fall of the Mayan civilization, the movie fails in that the Mayan civilization fell over 600 years before the Christian Spanish even arrived (SPOILER; as is depicted by the movie). When the Mayan civilization fell, Spain didn't even exist yet, but the area was part of an Islamic caliphate.
This "Mayan" civilization is depicted performing MASS human sacrifice which was NOT performed by the Maya, but rather was actually typical of Aztecs (a wholly different civilization).
Additionally, the flick also shows whole villages devastated by smallpox ... BEFORE the Spanish who transmitted it to the peoples of the new world, even arrive. Ridiculous.
Unless you're interested in exposing yourself to the racist inaccuracies in the portrayal, don't waste your time on this movie.
Instead, perhaps watch some science fiction fluff that doesn't even presume to be historically accurate.
