Review of Apocalypto (2006) by Mike H — 14 Dec 2011
Mel Gibson shocker - an excellent film. Albeit perhaps the most grotesque one i've ever seen? Kicks of with pillaging; Jaguar Paw's family is left down a well; then herded through the jungle in bondage; to arrive at a city of death where kids play in shit. That's just the preamble before human sacrifice. How bad can a day be?
It then settles down into a jungle chase movie, akin to Rambo as my brother said. However the digital photography means sustained momentum and adrenaline, so that it never bores. Indeed grotesque levels never dip either, as we have jaguars eating people's faces off. Pity the BBC didn't screen it in HD though - lovely forests amongst all the carnage.
