Review of Apocalypto (2006) by Branflakes5000 — 20 Jul 2022
This movie is a powerful film which has offended many critiques in ways they cant really understand - this should speak to its power. The reason they cant understand is that its based in a harsh reality, this reality.
and its final scene provides such a powerful juxtaposition that contradicts all left wing thought, that is infuriates them the way a baby is infuriated by rules they dont comprehend yet. Its everything a left wing film critique purports to love, theres no white people, theres not western culture, theres no whiteness at all, and yet theres this odd sense of despair and nihilism that comes with that, something they find disturbing.
Also, the juxtaposition with western civilization is obvious, which shows the brutalism and gore of non western society as it is, uncriticized. The humanity is fully there, but seen without a left wing lens to propagandize it, it forces you to confront your programming about how you are supposed to view these cultures.
Its a fascinating and brilliant film. and it shows why Gibson is in a league of his own when he does things like that, because he understand the truths of the left AND the right and he encapsulates them all, not just one side, and what you get is something that hits ALOT harder.
Because it feels inseparable from real. You dont feel like your watching a film, its that good.
