Violent, dark, confronting, and totally engrossing. Defining powerful and elemental roles for Martin Sheen and Marlin Brando (The Godfather notwithstanding). Strictly for adults only. Rewatch and consider the "horror" of war.
An anti-war war movie classic. Mythic. I liken it to another mythic (much more conventional) war movie Patton. Hard but rewarding. Apocalypse Redux is longer (added conventional superfluous scenes) but not preferred.
