Review of Apocalypse Now (1979) by Kristopher P — 10 Apr 2013
Chaos reigns in Vietnam! At least that's what this movie shows us. Perhaps war creates chaos and man left at his own devices can't help but drift towards it. That's certainly the case for Martin Sheen's character, as a modern Dante making his way through hell, 1960's Vietnam, a journey that only gets more mad and macabre as it goes on, and yet he can't handle real life anymore.
He only knows heat and the smell of napalm are more comfortable than the everyday. I've never been much for war movies, but this is obviously so much more. It almost feels anti-war as the setting of Vietnam feels more like a broken wonderland than a battlefield.
I thought the last 30 minutes dragged on a bit, but it only adds to the surrealist downward spiral the movie takes.
