Review of Apocalypse Now (1979) by Jeff L — 17 Apr 2013
Apocalypse Now has it all and never puts a foot wrong. The movie wrestles with intense themes, and Coppola brilliantly ties them in to the technical elements of the film. For example, AN demonstrates how war blurs the lines between right and wrong/ good and evil/ lightness and darkness and is in turn physically manifested in the way Coppola shoots the movie and plays with the lighting-- which is, by the way, absolutely stunning.
Apocalypse Now is thoughtful and thematically captures the essence of war even though the circumstances depicted may not necessarily be what soldiers literally experienced (it's called hyperbole).
The score drones and disorients audiences, the technical elements leave you floored, and the performances are complex and fully fleshed, each character being completely unique and individualistic. Apocalypse Now is not by any means an easy watch, but rewarding and brilliant.
One of the best movies ever made.
