Review of Anvil! The Story of Anvil (2008) by Tico P — 27 Feb 2010
This movie reminds me of that doc from a few years back American Movie. That could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your perspective. It's one of those "simpleton man-child pursues dream despite all obstacles" movies that is supposed to make us, the audience, applaud the resilience of the human spirit.
It comes awfully close to being a joke at the expense of its subjects. However, I admit to having a tear in my eye at one point in the movie. In the end, it's a documentary about two hosers who love metal and love each other and are unable to "grow up" and give up the dream despite what the continual failure does to their mental health.
Delusion wins the day! Of course, it ends with a somewhat happy ending in that they play to an appreciative audience in Japan, because there's a market in Japan for everything, but you know the next day, Lips is delivering food to elementary schools.
