Review of Another Year (2010) by Noël D — 26 May 2011
This is classic Mike Leigh, so if you like him you'll like this, and if you don't get him you won't get this. I loved it, Lesley Manville especially - Mary truly lived and was such a sympathetic character whereas in other hands she could have been a figure of scorn. In fact, Manville steals the show, and I found myself pitying Mary that he has such smug friends as Tom and especially Geri. So much happens to those around them, but they plug away at their allotment and have social gatherings for all and sundry, yet when two of their friends Mary and Ken) are obviously and openly in trouble, they don't give a damn except to smugly ask eachother what they can do and agree nothing. The way they look down on their friends is horrible.
A wonderful ending though. LOVE Mary!
